Polkadot connects independent blockchains, called parachains, to a shared security layer known as the relay chain. Instead of every project bootstrapping its own validator set, parachains inherit security from the network while keeping their own rules. Cross-chain messaging lets them communicate directly. DOT is used for staking, governance and securing a parachain slot.
