About Bitcoin
Bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency, launched in 2009 by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto. It runs on a proof-of-work blockchain where miners compete to add blocks and are rewarded with newly issued coins plus transaction fees. Supply is capped at 21 million BTC and the issuance rate halves roughly every four years. Bitcoin is used mainly as a store of value and a settlement network rather than for everyday payments.
