Arbitrum is an optimistic rollup that scales Ethereum by executing transactions off the main chain and posting compressed data back to it. Ethereum remains the source of truth, so users inherit its security while paying a fraction of the fees. "Optimistic" refers to the challenge period during which invalid results can be disputed.
